It?s fight day, fight night, fight week, whatever. Tonight, some of the best mid-tier fighters in the UFC will go toe to toe in Fairfax, Virginia, as the Patriot Center hosts UFC on Fuel 3. Headlined by an intriguing match-up between Dustin Poirier and Chan Sung Jung, tonight?s card is highlighted by a number of fan favorites and features a few fighters who are fighting to stay relevant in the promotion. The preliminary portion of the event has been subject to a breakdown, so now it?s time to do the same for the main card.

Tom Lawlor (7-4) vs. Jason MacDonald (25-15)

?Filthy? Lawlor is back after he took a nap in the cage at the hands of one Chris Weidman. The always-funny wrestler has had a rough time lately inside the Octagon and needs a win here tonight. MacDonald is nearing the end of his career so he?ll the Canadian submission specialist will be out to close things out with a win tonight followed by an even bigger win at UFC 149 in Calgary.

Unfortunately for ?The Athlete?, I think his opponent has other plans. I expect Tom to impose his will and use his wrestling to grind out a decision.

Winner ? Tom Lawlor defeats Jason MacDonald via Unanimous Decision

Fabio Maldonado (18-4) vs. Igor Pokrajac (24-8)

This fight could be fireworks. Maldonado hits hard and man does he loves to throw rib roasters. While he?s not necessarily the most consistent fighter, he?s tough and can bring the pain. Pokrajac hits hard as well ? just ask Krzysztof Soszynski. The tough-as-nails Croatian fighter hopes to be the next big thing to come out of that country but he has mighty big shoes to fill.

The biggest factor in this fight, for me, is that fact that of his eight losses, Pokrajac has lost by TKO four times. When facing a heavy handed foe such as Maldonado that spells trouble.

Winner ? Fabio Maldonado defeats Igor Pokrajac via TKO Round 1

Jeff Hougland (10-4) vs. Yves Jabouin (17-7)

Jabouin looks for his third straight win tonight, hoping to make a splash in the always-changing bantamweight division. He takes on Hougland, who, despite a rough start to his career, has put together one hell of a winning streak. This bout could set one of these men up for a Top 10 opponent and put said individual one step closer to fighting for the coveted UFC belt.

I like both of these fighters, but this fight seems pretty clear cut to me. Hougland is good, but in Jabouin he faces an experienced, solid fighter who is likely to have his way with him even though it could be very close.

Winner ? Yves Jabouin defeats Jeff Hougland via Unanimous Decision

Jeremy Stephens (20-7) vs. Donald Cerrone (17-4)

I don?t imagine I have to say too much about these men. Cerrone likes to kick some ass. Stephens likes to kick some ass. Both men need to get back on track and this fight is sure to be violent.

It will likely be the best fight of the night, and I imagine a brawl is what we?re going to see, but Cerrone is just too good and Stephens does not fair well against the upper echelon of the division. As such, Cerrone will pick him apart and finish him late in the fight.

Winner ? Donald Cerrone defeats Jeremy Stephens via Submission Round 3

Amir Sadollah (5-3) vs. Jorge Lopez (11-2)

TUF winner Sadollah returns to the Octagon for his ninth career fight. You?d think he?d have more, but we all seem to forget how green Sadollah is. While he has some good and bad fights in the UFC, he?s really coming into his own and he?s doing pretty well for himself in one of the toughest divisions in the sport. Lopez was touted as the next big thing though the Wanderlei Silva protege underwhelmed in his most recent appearance. While he?s still young, and the sky may very well be the limit, to quote Georges St-Pierre I have not been impressed by his performance.

For those reasons, I have to pick Sadollah. He has faced plenty of adversity, and I just don?t see what Lopez can throw at Amir that he can?t handle. This one isn?t going to be pretty.

Winner ? Amir Sadollah defeats Jorge Lopez via Unanimous Decision

Chan Sung Jung (12-3) vs. Dustin Poirier (12-1)

?The Korean Zombie? enters the octagon after starching Mark Hominick back in Toronto. The skilled Korean Top Team fighter, who often throws caution to wind in favor of a brawl, is a surprise success story in the division and looks to keep up that momentum tonight. He takes on one of the hottest featherweight prospects in 23-year old Poirier. Poirier came onto the scene and immediately started making his opponents look silly. Simply put, the young, ever-improving future title contender has the skills to end any opponent?s evening whether standing or on the ground.

Jung is about to be just another name on Poirier?s record. Personally, I don?t believe the hype surrounding ?The Korean Zombie?. Is he tough? Yes, yes he is. Is he a great fighter? Far from it. Beating Leonard Garcia and knocking out a guy who gets dropped by any glancing blow are not enough to make me believe he stands a chance tonight. Poirier will dominate this fight from start to finish.

Winner ? Dustin Poirier defeats Chan Sung Jung via Submission Round 2

The main card gets started at 8:00 PM EST on FUEL TV and Rogers Sportsnet in Canada. If you happen to miss any of the action, the 5 OZ family has you covered, as we?ll have live results as the fights happen.

May 14, 2012; Fairfax, VA, USA; Dustin Poirier reacts after weighing in for his fight against the Korean Zombie during the Korean Zombie vs Poirier weigh-in at Patriot Center. Mandatory Credit: Rafael Suanes-US PRESSWIRE

Bloody Elbow’s Steph “Crooklyn” Daniels caught up with Dustin Poirier before his UFC on Fuel TV 3 bout with Chan Sung Jung, “the Korean Zombie.” Brian Hemminger transcribed some of the highlights, full audio is after the jump. Kid Nate.

On where he is coming into the fight
Poirier:
“Just the whole journey of finding myself, who I really am and just growing up as a person and a martial artist. That’s been the struggle but I’ve found me just over these last couple fights and these last couple years. I’m really finding out who I am and I’ve learned so much in my fights not just as a fighter but as a person. Traveling and training and meeting new people, just becoming who I am now, I’m really happy with who I am and comfortable in my skin and I think that journey was a struggle in the beginning.

“I’m gonna rise to the occasion and he’ll bring the best out of me. This fight’s a big fight. Even my last fight I was nervous. I said, “Man, I worked so hard to get here and now this young guy has an opportunity to come in here and make a name off of me. It was his debut, 20 year old guy, youngest guy on the UFC roster.” All the work I put in and he could come in here, I was confident in my skills but it’s a fight, anything could happen. I went in there and performed like I knew I could. This next fight is pressure. I want to live up like my last fight and the fight before that and keep growing, keep the hype going and get a title shot in the future. I feel the pressure for that too. If I go in there on May 15th and I perform up to my ability and fight, I’m gonna win. There’s no doubt in my mind.”

On preparing for Chan Sung Jung:

Poirier: “I’m crazy about [reviewing my opponents' footage], I watch it a couple times a day every day. I drink my coffee and do conditioning in the morning and I watch it a couple of times and then I come home and watch some again. I watch it a lot and I really think like in the Pablo Garza fight, I started watching him a lot and that helped. My last fight was kind of short notice with a bunch of different changes so I didn’t get to do it as much. For the Zombie fight, I’ve had a lot of footage to watch. People change between fights and his last fight was a seven second knockout so that’s kind of hard to watch so I keep going back further into his tapes and see where he’s strong breaking that down. I’m obsessed.

“Obviously the Korean Zombie has a great chin and heavy hands so I’m not going to try to brawl with him or try to overwhelm him. It all depends on the style but I don’t really go in there with gameplans, I just go in there to fight. I feel like I’m dangerous wherever the fight goes. Every fight starts on the feet so I have to be ready there but then it’s all about whatever transition we go to. For me, I don’t think, “I’m gonna take you down,” or anything like that. I just try to use what I’ve learned and observed to win a fight.

“I think he gets a little bit emotional. We’ve seen it over and over again where his technique goes out the window and he gets a little wild. I think I’m a little bit more of an accurate striker and a little slicker with my stand-up. He obviously has great stand-up skills, I’ve seen flashes of it in his brawling but most of the time when he gets hit, he wants to hit you five times harder and he drops his hands and gets crazy so I’m gonna have to pick my shots and fight a smart fight and be professional and I know I will.”

Starring as one-half of tonight’s UFC on Fuel TV 3 main event, the widely adored Chan Sung Jung will tangle with Dustin Poirier to determine the next challenger to face featherweight champion Jose Aldo.

Affectionately known as “The Korean Zombie” for his inhuman ability to trudge through a hail of punches, we’ve seen Jung evolve leaps and bounds with each of his dramatic stateside performances. First, the combat sports world was infected with Zombie Mania after his consensus “Fight of the Decade” against Leonard Garcia in his WEC debut. Then, he was criticized for the very trait that defined him when George Roop became the first fighter to ever — in competition, training, or life in general — part Jung from consciousness.

Likable and exciting or not — Jung was 0-2 in the states at this point and in desperate need of a win. Following the WEC caravan over to the Octagon, he rematched Leonard Garcia and not only exacted vengeance by tapping the Team Jackson brawler, but finagled the UFC’s first submission by Twister. Jung learned the technique just like every other high-level fighter picks up submission knowledge: he watched a Youtube video. Finally, everyone admitted their respect for Jung and felt bad for being so logical before confidently predicting that kickboxing technician Mark Hominick would steamroll him. Just 6-seconds into their UFC 140 match, Hominick was crumpled on the canvas.

Myself and a few of the Bloody Elbow staff bounced some questions off “The Korean Zombie” leading into his showdown with Dustin Poirier. It went something like this …

Dallas Winston: What can you share as far an update on the Tri-Coasta debacle?

Chan Sung Jung: We got a recommendation from the UFC and have hired the same lawyer that Junior dos Santos uses. Hopefully things will be resolved soon. Unfortunately, I can’t really go into detail beyond that. I will say that if you want to buy a Korean Zombie shirt, please get it from Traumma Combat!

Dallas Winston: Tell us about TKZ’s new sponsor, Traumma Combat, and how that deal came about?

Chan Sung Jung: We got connected by Oren Hodak at KO Reps. We really wanted to get a new Korean Zombie shirt out there for the people who were wanting to buy something but not support Tri-Coasta and Traumma Combat reached out to us. They’ve been great to work with and have gone out of their way to be accommodating to me.

Continued in the full entry.

Josh Nason: After that first fight with Garcia, it was Zombie Mania. Dana was wearing his shirt and people knew him more than ever before. Was that overwhelming? Too much attention too soon?

Chan Sung Jung: It was really unexpected. I don’t know if it was too much too soon, but it did take me by surprise. I appreciate all the support and interest that I’ve gotten from the fans worldwide!

Ben Thapa: Do you have any words for Hominick who is currently going through consecutive losses? Did you do anything specific to get through your two losses and come back strong for the Garcia rematch and the Hominick victory?

Chan Sung Jung: Mark is a gentleman. He’s a real sportsmen and I’m sure he’ll get back on track soon. I’m sure he knows that he just needs to stay confident and not give up. After my loss to George Roop, I was forced to re-evaluate my whole game. Ultimately, it was a good thing for me. It has allowed me to grow a lot as a fighter. I had been relying too much on my chin and my “zombie” fighting style, but that KO loss changed all that. It made me realize that I have to keep developing as a fighter and be more technical, as opposed to a brawler.

Ben Thapa: In terms of Korean judo, do you train with any of the champions or also-rans in preparation for your clinch work?

Chan Sung Jung: Bu Kyung Jung was a member of Korean Top Team and he has been a role model to me and I’ve learned a lot from him. He won a silver medal in judo at the 2000 Summer Olympics, so obviously his judo is top notch. He definitely helped me improve my clinch work. My clinch work really developed a lot after working with Bu Kyung. We also have a lot of other guys on our team that are experienced Judokas, so that helps too.

Anton Tabuena: Who do you think is the next Korean fighter we can look out for, and expect to be signed by the UFC in the near future?

Chan Sung Jung: There are a lot of talented fighters in Korea right now. If I had to choose one guy, I’d say it’s Hyun Gyu Lim. He’s another member of Korean Top Team who fights at welterweight. He’s really big and long, especially for a WW. He’s huge and really skilled all around. He’s probably the best all around fighter on our team, myself and Dongi Yang included! His fights are always exciting and he’s had 4 straight 1st-round KOs. Hopefully he’ll get the call from the UFC soon.

Dallas Winston: How was your training camp for Poirier? Are you 100% healthy and injury-free?

Chan Sung Jung: It’s been a good camp, but I’ve had my share of injuries. It all part of the game. Injuries, and fighting through them, are all part of being a professional fighter. My shoulder and my knee have been giving me problems, but regardless, I’m 100% ready to go.

Dallas Winston: You’ve typically had an advantage in either striking, grappling or height and length over your WEC and UFC opponents. Poirier excels in the same areas you do. Is this how you see the match up?

Chan Sung Jung: Yeah, we’re similar in that regard. I think that’s what is going to make this fight exciting for the fans.

Dallas Winston: Did your similar styles make it tougher to game-plan for him? Can you share what you did to prepare for him specifically, and what you think your advantages are against him?

Chan Sung Jung: No, I think it’s made it easier, actually. I’ve worked on my all around game and my stamina, since it’s going to be a 5-round fight. While we have similar strong points, I feel that I have the edge over him in all areas.

Dallas Winston: You and Poirier engaged in a little Twitter beef. Would you say that was playful jousting, or is there even a tiny bit of animosity or dislike for one another?

Chan Sung Jung: I don’t know how he feels, but I think of us as being co-workers. We’re all professionals and we work for the same company. Part of our job is to get fans interested in the fight. That’s what the whole thing on Twitter was about. I have absolutely no bad feelings towards Dustin.

Dallas Winston: You’re both vying for a shot at Jose Aldo, who’s almost built an aura of invincibility. What fighter traits do you feel it will take to unseat Aldo? How do you think that both you and Poirier would fare against him?

Chan Sung Jung: I’m not looking past this fight. My focus is winning this fight, first and foremost. As far as what it will take to beat Aldo, I think it depends on the particular fighter. Aggression and confidence would be a must. Allowing him to dictate the pace and being intimated by him would be a disaster for any fighter.

Dallas Winston: As always — what should we expect from The Korean Zombie against Poirier? Any more dramatic finishes or clever submissions that you’ve been working on or have up your sleeve?

Chan Sung Jung: It’s going to be a great fight. My prediction? I’ll win by KO. There are lots of things that I’ve been working on, but I don’t get stuck on those things because you never know what’s going to happen once the fight starts. You have to be ready for anything … and I am!

Dallas Winston: The floor is all yours for final comments.

Chan Sung Jung: As always, I want to thank the fans and my sponsors. In particular, I’d like to thank Sseda, Monster Zym and Traumma Combat. Also, the Korean American community here in the northern VA/DC area has been really great. They’ve really given us the red carpet treatment since we arrived.

UFC lightweight Jeremy Stephens (20-7) is out to make history on Tuesday night when he mixes it up with Donald Cerrone (17-4) in a co-headlining clash at UFC on Fuel 3. Stephens has earned himself a reputation as a dangerous draw for any foe over the past five years inside the Octagon with heavy-hands and an aggressive approach to competition, notching fourteen TKOs in twenty victories, while Cerrone has never been stopped with strikes in any of his 21 professional outings.

According to Stephens, he?s looking forward to testing that durability, especially based on Cerrone?s willingness to stand against opponents even in situations where doing so may not be the best strategy. If ?Cowboy? follows that trend next week, Stephens is confident he?ll become the first to stop Cerrone by means other than a submission.

?I don?t hit like a normal ?55er. I probably knock guys out at 170 and above,? explained Stephens in an interview with USA Today. ?Once he starts feeling that power, I?ve got a feeling that he?s going to try to resort to the ground game?I feel like he?s going to make the attempt. I?m going to shut that down and keep it standing and knock him out.?

?Cowboy?s a guy who likes to pressure guys, like to bully them. When he has that momentum, he?s very dangerous,? Stephens continued on Cerrone. ?When I come forward, we?re definitely going to collide. It?s going to be who?s coming forward and who has the lack of respect for each other?s power. I can tell you right now, I don?t really care for his kicks. I couldn?t care less about his kicks. I couldn?t care less about his punching power. And I?m going to break him.?

Both men should be ready to deliver fireworks come showtime as each has recently suffered a hard-fought decision loss. Cerrone was last seen falling to Nate Diaz while Stephens came up short against Anthony Pettis this past October.

Yoshihiro Akiyama shows off his torn ACL. He suffered the injury when training with Masato apparently.

We’re back with another version of the Bloody Elbow News Roundup, and we’ve got a lot to cover today. Did you know that Jason “Mayhem” Miller was a guest writer in Maxim this month? Or that Daniel Cormier is doing goofy promos with kids to promote his Strikeforce bout with Josh Barnett next weekend? How about Dan Henderson sitting down for close to a half hour to analyze the heck out of UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones? Well, here’s your place to catch up on all the stuff you missed.

Let’s start with some simple stuff. If you missed the UFC on Fuel 3 weigh-in video today, we got you covered. Did you miss the first episode of UFC Primetime: Dos Santos vs. Mir? Check it out here. Want to see Daniel Cormier get pseudo-attacked by some martial arts students in a Strikeforce promo? We got you.

If you didn’t catch the latest episode of The Ultimate Fighter Brazil (a guy gassed so bad he couldn’t get up), check the recap here (via UFC.com).

UFC 149 sold out quickly in Calgary. Not exactly surprising, since they’ve never been there before and Canadian scalpers loooove the UFC (via MMA Weekly).

We all know Dan Henderson is a smart dude, if a bit goofy sometimes. He’s obviously doing a lot of things right to be able to last this long in such a brutal sport, and these videos illustrate the analytical side of Hendo. He sat down with MMAInterviews.tv for close to half an hour and talked about his UFC 151 opponent Jon Jones. If you have the time, it’s definitely worth a watch. Here’s part one and you can catch part two (and a little Mayhem life coaching) after the jump.

Star-divide

Finally, one of the more amusing things I came across today involved Mayhem in Maxim. Mr. Miller was a guest writer in the men’s magazine this month, and wrote a piece entitled “Mayhem’s 7 Man Laws”. It’s pretty humorous and quite intelligent, though I’m not quite sure why he had to use the word “goddamn” so often. Here’s a bit about him meeting famed author Chuck Palahniuk:

I introduced myself, and poured my heart out on how his book sent my life in a crazy right turn, inspiring me to channel my youthful aggression into fighting. After that, I stammered through some specific questions I wanted answered, and first he gave half-ass answers that said “I’m tired, beat it.” Then he deflected them, and focused on the fact I was a fighter. He gave me the advice, “Be careful, don’t get a detached retina.”

Yeah, thanks a lot for the tip pal. I didn’t come here to receive an ophthalmological exam.

Dejected, I walked back out to the busy L.A. street and yelled “CHUCK PALAHNIUK DIDN’T TEACH ME SH*T!!!!!”

On the way back to the car, I was thinking more and more about the meeting, then I realized something. Without words, Chuck was saying something much larger. He was saying, “Figure it out your f**king self. I didn’t work my ass off to be an awesome writer just to give out the knowledge for free to some mouth-breather with cauliflower ear!”

I got it, Chuck.

If you can’t learn from an experience, it’s because you haven’t thought about it hard enough. I thought about this one and figured out that it’s up to you to have the courage to risk your ass trying to make your dreams come true. If you quit shy of your goals, you’re the only one that has to live with it.

UFC featherweight Dustin Poirier knows exactly what to expect tomorrow night when he locks horns with Chan Sung Jung inside the Octagon at UFC on Fuel 3. No, the 23-year old doesn?t have some sort of magical crystal ball revealing a detailed account of the action to come, but he does understand what he and ?The Korean Zombie? both bring to the cage.

?Fans can expect everything from me on Tuesday night, even the kitchen sink,? said an excited Poirier in a recent interview with FightLine. ?It?s going to be a war; it?s going to be an incredible 25 minutes. I?m excited to test myself and I know this will make me a better fighter. We?re going to go in there and rise to the occasion. I?ve been watching video of him every morning, he?s an animal. I love his aggression when he gets hit he wants to hit you back twice. He keeps moving forward. We are the main event for a reason and I plan on showing the UFC they made the right decision placing me in this position.?

After the fight, assuming he wins, Poirier would also be open to facing fellow contender Hatsu Hioki later this year if his 145-pound peer gets by his own challenge in the form of Ricardo Lamas at UFC on FX 4 in June. Both are considered frontrunners to face the winner of Jose Aldo?s upcoming title-defense against Erik Koch.

?I think it would be perfect timing to be honest with you,? stated Poirier of a possible pairing with Hioki. ?The Hioki fight is a month after mine and it would give me the opportunity to take some time to rest up and prepare properly. I want get back in the Gi and have fun training some jiu-jitsu and relax a little bit, not from training, but from the stress of preparing from a fight.?

?A lot goes into training for a fight, it?s not just physical, it?s emotional, and I put all of myself into it. Sometimes it?s nice to take some time and just get better as a fighter,? he continued, adding he wasn?t counting out the possibility of Lamas grinding out a decision.

Fans can catch Poirier-Jung going at it tomorrow evening on Fuel TV with the main broadcast starting up at 8:00 PM EST. Poirier is 12-1 with five straight wins to his credit while Jung holds a career mark of 12-3 including consecutive finishes of Leonard Garcia and Mark Hominick.

A few years back welterweight James Wilks followed in the footsteps of fellow Brit Michael Bisping by winning the Ultimate Fighter. Unfortunately, fast-forward to today and it appears Wilks will never have a chance to emulate his countryman?s success let alone compete inside the cage again.

The 34-year old recently took to Twitter to announce he had hung up his gloves for good due to an undisclosed injury. Wilks will now focus his time on teaching at his gym (Lightning MMA in Laguna Hills, California).

Wilks hasn?t fought since an October 2010 loss to Claude Patrick at UFC 120. The stumble dropped his overall record to 7-4 and 2-2 inside the Octagon. He emerged as a talent to watch on TUF 9, winning the show by submitting DaMarques Johnson in the opening round of their bout at the finale.

“My goal was to become the UFC champ and that might be put on hold for a little bit so now my goal is to do my best, become a better mixed martial artist, and put on a show for the fans, and represent my team well. That’s what motivates me and so does the paycheck, so let’s do it… Of course I want to finish Josh. I want bad intentions towards him; I want to destroy this guy. I want to make a statement but if a great fighter shows up and it’s a war, then it’s a war. I don’t plan on sitting back and cruising through a victory, sitting on a lead or something like that. I want to take some risks and I plan on it.”

Gilbert Melendez has had to put his dreams of being the number one lightweight in the world and the UFC champion on the backburner ever since the Ultimate Fighting Championship stopped signing over its talent. Speaking to MMA Weekly, the Strikeforce lightweight champion discusses taking out his frustrations on a man he’s had some major history with in former Strikeforce 155 pound champion Josh Thomson. Melendez and Thomson split their first two meetings in a pair of five round wars which were two of the best fights of their respective years. Will history repeat itself or can “El Nino’s” dream of a big finish against “The Punk” come true this Saturday night (May 19. 2012) at Strikeforce: “Barnett vs. Cormier?”

Mariusz Pudzianowksi vs. Bob Sapp may have headlined KSW 19, held this past weekend in Poland, but Mamed ?Cannibal? Khalidov vs. Rodney ?Sho Nuff The Master? Wallace undoubtedly brought the crowd to their feet. Khalidov ? a Chechen-Polish middleweight ? clearly has a background in either karate or TKD, by the looks of his kicks. But with this fight, only one spinning kick connected cleanly; it was a punch that ended the fight. One punch. I?ll be honest, Khalidov was kind of under my radar, but one look at his record say he?s no joke, with wins over UFC fighters Matt Lindland, James Irvin and Jesse Taylor. Granted, those guys aren?t top-shelf competition, and I think it?s clear the only way he?s going to get it is to get signed by the UFC. It would be interesting to see how he?d stack up, and it would flesh out a division that many have said it very thin.

Here?s a story from the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area about James ?Humble Pie? Cianci. James, a longtime training partner of UFC fighter Jimy ?The Kid? Hettes. I?ve seen James fight several times and can honestly say I don?t think he knows how to have a boring fight. Not to mention he has a very unique nickname, ?Humble Pie? ? he is in fact, humble, and serves up a generous portion of humble pie to any opponents who underestimate him. Cianci (3-1) fights Joel Roberts (7-3) at PA CageFight 12 this Saturday at Genetti Manor in Dickson City.

by Julie Imel, of the570.com

Up Close & Personal
Humble Pie ?
Outside of the ring, local Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter James Cianci (6-1) is relaxed, pleasant, polite and funny. Inside the ring, his persona completely changes. Focused and serious, there?s an intimidating quiet serenity that overcomes him as he stares down his opponent. With Cianci, there are no showy antics; he?s all business in the ring. Known as ?Humble Pie? for his down-to-earth attitude and for serving up a dish of ?humble pie? to his opponents, Cianci is now training for his next big fight: the PA Cage Fight Championship. He?ll take on Lehighton?s Joel Roberts at Genetti Manor in Dickson City on May 19. Meet MMA fighter James Cianci?

How do you describe MMA to people who aren?t familiar with it?
It?s fighting. It?s not boxing, and it?s not anything goes. There are rules. Whoever has the most tools in his bag and knows how to use them better than his opponent nine times out of 10 is going to win the fight. It?s really about being a well-rounded fighter. You can?t just be good at Jiu Jitsu or just good at boxing. You have to be good at everything. This is everything in one pot.

MMA is fairly new to this area. When did you become interested in this sport?
The first fight sanctioned by the Athletic Commission in Pennsylvania was in June of 2009. Before that, there were unsanctioned fights, but it wasn?t really big around here. I fought on that first card as an amateur ? it was my first fight. At the beginning, it was a little bit rocky. I didn?t know if it was going to be something I?d pursue. It was just a hobby and as I had the opportunity to showcase it a little bit, it grew.

Now you?re fighting professionally. Tell us how things progressed.
I got into it back in 2006. I started learning Jiu Jitsu, and that was just because I had seen a lot of UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship). I was a big fan, and I decided to try it out. I was at Temple University getting my undergraduate degree, and I was doing it (Jiu Jitsu) as a hobby, more or less. When I graduated, I moved back here and I continued to do Jiu Jitsu. One day somebody mentioned a cage fight would be coming in three months and it would be the first one in PA sanctioned by the State Athletic Commission. And at that point I was only doing Jiu Jitsu. I didn?t have any boxing or stand up-abilities, but I just raised my hand. I figured why not?

Woa?that?s a little crazy!
(Laughs) Yeah, I probably wasn?t fully prepared for it when I first started, but I had enough confidence in my Jiu Jitsu that I figured I could go in there and take the guy down and submit him without having to worry about getting punched in the face too much. For the past two and a half years, I?ve been perfecting every other aspect of my game, working every day to get better. But even after that first fight, it was just a recreational thing. I wasn?t planning on making it a career. I just kept winning and a fan base was building up and (reporters) were writing articles about me, and I realized maybe there was something more to it. So I decided to take it to the next level and apply for my professional fighting license.

In addition to Jiu Jitsu, what other martial arts have you studied?
Judo, which is throws and takedowns. I trained with Jimmy Hettes. He?s a professional MMA fighter from the area who?s in UFC now. He?s a world-class Judo technician. And now I?m working on Muay Thai (a form of kickboxing from Thailand) and Boxing. I?m putting it all together.

Let?s talk about why they call you Humble Pie.
A guy at the gym, Kevin Roginski, called me Humble Pie. He?s always joking around with everybody. When I first started out, I wasn?t used to all the attention that I would get from it, and I think it was my attitude towards the whole thing that made him start calling me Humble Pie. Then it kind of evolved into me serving my opponents humble pie. I was on a nice winning streak when I got that nickname. And I don?t like to take myself too seriously, so I figured Humble Pie was a lot different than the nicknames you generally hear in MMA, and I liked it right from the start.

How does your personality change when you?re in the ring?
I?m a lot different when I fight than I am on an average day. I?m normally really laid back, but when it comes to fighting, I?m hyper competitive. I always have been. I don?t like to lose, so once I?m in there, that?s it. Losses are really detrimental in this sport, especially if you want to get to the top. So I take it very seriously. I don?t want to get in there and hold anything back; I want to get in there and put everything on the line every time because I don?t want to lose a fight thinking I could have done more.

Your next big fight is just around the corner. What can we expect to see at Genetti?s on May 19?
There will probably be about 1,000 people there and every seat in the house will be a good seat. It?s fun. It?s going to be a big night of fights. My fight is the main event, and it?s for the title at 135 pounds. I have a good local following and so does my opponent. We?ll both have a lot of fans there and it?s going to be wild.

How are you preparing?
I do at least two practices a day (each practice is about two hours) whenever I can. I train twice a day, every day, six days a week. And now that the fight is just around the corner, I?ve been trying to do a purely cardio workout in between them, so I?m doing hill sprints because that?s the only way to get up one more notch before a fight. You have to focus on cardio.

How hard is it to break into the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC)?
The dream of getting into the UFC is a realistic one because the guy I train with every day ? Jimmy Hettes ? is in it, so I know I can get there. I also know it?s not going to be easy. I?m going to need to fight another six or seven fights and win them all. If I can finish all my opponents by knockout or submission it will be even better. I just need to win. Jimmy went right from the local show into the UFC. I?ll probably have to take steps through a couple organizations to get there, but with a couple of wins, especially over Joel Roberts, who?s a really good fighter, I?ll get there. ? julie imel

Kimbo Slice improved to 5-0 this weekend in the boxing world. He made quick work of Jesse Porter, knocking him out in the opening seconds of the fight. I don?t even think Porter threw a punch. Check it out above.

The legend of Nick Diaz grew last night, though not necessarily in a positive manner, after the controversial competitor played the role of absentee in a much-hyped BJJ superfight with decorated grappler Braulio Estima. The two were scheduled to serve as the main event in a series of matches at the World Jiu-Jitsu Expo with their purses being donated to charity.

Problems first arose when Estima had difficulty making weight on Friday night, upsetting Diaz. However, Estima hit his required mark on Saturday morning and things seemed to be back on track. However, for unknown reasons at this point, Diaz ultimately decided to pass on their bout without informing anyone and hasn?t be heard from since.

An alternate was brought out to face Estima though the visibly upset submission-specialist passed on the opportunity, saying he came to face Diaz and Diaz only. He also added he would be willing to fight Diaz under MMA rules in the future since the 28-year old was apparently not willing to take him on in BJJ.

Those closest to Diaz have since gone online to comment on the matter with none revealing his location or reasoning though younger brother Nate Diaz offered up some possible insight on why his sibling may have skipped the scrap, taking to Twitter this morning and reaffirming issues with Estima?s difficulty on the scale, writing, ?Braulio didn?t show up on weight the day of weigh ins knowing he had pull? WTF??

Nick Diaz no-showing his Brazilian jiu-jitsu superfight against Braulio Estima wasn’t the only major combat sports related event to take place last night (Sat., May 12, 2012). No, Kimbo Slice also returned to the squared circle for his fifth career boxing match.

And it predictably ended via knockout. Laughably so, even.

Kimbo — real name Kevin Ferguson — was fed battled a man named Jesse Porter, which is important only for prosperity’s sake. In the event that Slice ever actually competes in a match that isn’t designed to get him an easy victory, Porter will be known simply as one of the many cans collected along the way.

Porter was 3-5 entering the bout and was knocked out in just 42 seconds in his last loss. It took Kimbo 36 seconds to dispose of him, which is a minor miracle when you see how little offense the guy had to offer.

Watch the video after the jump. Don’t worry, it won’t take up too much of your time.

Star-divide
