The future of UFC great B.J. Penn has been in a bit of doubt following his apparent retirement following his UFC 137 loss, when he said “Joe, this was probably the last time you’ll see me in here. I can’t keep performing at the top level. That’s it Joe. I got a daughter and another daughter on the way, I don’t want to go home looking like this. I’m done.” Last month, UFC president Dana White said that despite having “heard some s**t” about Penn being retired, when he talked to B.J., he said that he was going to fight again.

There was also a story earlier this month where Dana said that he had tried to make a fight between Penn and Strikeforce champion Gilbert Melendez, but that Penn told him he wasn’t fighting for a while.

Now it’s Josh Koscheck who looks like he may have won the Penn lottery:

This may be an appealing fight for Penn as it’s an easy fight to promote. The trash talk between Koscheck and Penn would be pretty solid and probably draw some extra fan interest.

It’s also a great fight for Penn. Penn’s wresting defense is still top notch, especially against someone like Koscheck who has good wrestling but doesn’t really do a great job of mixing up where the takedowns are coming from. On the feet, Koscheck doesn’t utilize a lot of variety in his striking. It’s mostly uppercuts and overhand rights thrown like a baseball. That’s the kind of striking game that Penn has always picked apart with his much cleaner boxing.

We’ll see if the fight being offered to Koscheck actually leads anywhere or not, but this seems like the kind of bout that might bring Penn out of hiding.

Burrell, who will face Chris Spang on the main card for this Saturday night?s Strikeforce event in San Jose, California, plans on making his family and friends proud back home in Philadelphia.

The welterweight was originally set to face Bobby Voelker but an injury forced Voekler out. Of course, the opponent doesn?t really matter to Burrell ? he just wants to fight.

?We got a chip on our shoulder out here,? said Burrell of Philadelphia in a recent interview with Strikeforce?s website. ?Not a lot of people take us seriously. We don?t have a lot of good wrestling gyms or big MMA gyms out here, so when you hear that you?re fighting somebody from Philly, you think, ?What?s out there, who do they have, he must by corny.? That?s how I feel about it, so every time I leave Philly, I?m putting Philly on my back.?

Burrell-Spang will be part of the Showtime card also featuring the final of the Heavyweight Grand Prix and Strikeforce lightweight champ Gilbert Melendez defending his title against Josh Thomson.

In Melendez, Burrell sees someone who has what he wants for himself ? championship gold.

?I see myself always getting better and I see myself as a future champion,? Burrell said. ?Sometime soon.?

Before his UFC on Fuel 3 bout with Jason MacDonald last night, Tom Lawlor hadn’t stepped in the cage in seven months and apparently wasn’t in the best of financial shape. He won a $40,000 dollar bonus for knockout of the night, which came in very handy. Lawlor spoke to MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani in a post-fight interview about his money issues:

“I’ll be honest. I’m broke. I have no money. This money that I got today, it’s going to be the first time I’ve deposited a check in over a year. A year and a half. This is like a big deal to me. I had to borrow money from friends and family just in order to go into this fight. I want to thank them, obviously. This means a lot to me mentally, it means a lot to my bank account.”

…

“I think I miscalculated the cost of living in the Northeast. I basically took all my money, bought a house and blew through my money – just living costs, traveling, price of gas, multiple training locations.”

I’m not 100% sure, but I seem to remember Lawlor posting on the UG a month or two ago to ask for some advice in regards to gyms that might be hiring trainers. I didn’t think much about it at the time, but it makes sense now. This is similar to what Pat Barry had to deal with back in 2009, when he said he was going to be evicted six days after his UFC 104 bout with Antoni Hardonk and was down to eating ketchup and rice. Being a fighter definitely isn’t easy for some guys.

You can catch the whole interview after the jump.

Two of the top-ranked light heavyweights in Strikeforce will have a rematch this Saturday night (May 19, 2012) as former Strikeforce 205 pound champion Rafael Cavalcante challenges American Kickboxing Academy big man Mike Kyle on the main card of Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Cormier in San Jose. Cavalcante lost to Kyle in 2008, having his title [...]

Cavalcante lost to Kyle in 2008, having his title aspirations delayed for two years by “Mak” although he would eventually claim the Strikeforce championship. Now, “Feijao” is looking to remove one of the dark marks on his record by avenging his first loss under the Strikeforce banner.

Mike Kyle has looked terrific at light heavyweight in the last few years, only losing twice at heavyweight against current top big men Fabricio Werdum and Antonio Silva. Kyle has consistently handled everyone at 205 pounds and could be in line for a vacant title shot if he can beat “Feijao” again this weekend.

Can Cavalcante finally right the biggest wrong on his current resume? Will Mike Kyle be able to repeat history on Saturday night with another knockout? What’s the key to victory for both light heavyweights?

Let’s find out:

Rafael Cavalcante

Record: 11-3 overall, 4-1 in Strikeforce

Key Wins: Muhammed Lawal (Strikeforce: Houston), Yoel Romero (Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Kharitonov), Antwain Britt (Strikeforce: Heavy Artillery)

Key Losses: Dan Henderson (Strikeforce: Feijao vs. Henderson), Mike Kyle (Strikeforce: Lawler vs. Shields)

How he got here: Rafael Cavalcante has been a highly touted Brazilian prospect for a long time. Training alongside Anderson Silva at Black House, “Feijao” was all set to work his way towards a Strikeforce light heavyweight title shot in 2008 before an injury forced then-champion “Babalu” Sobral off the card.

In his place stepped American Kickboxing Academy’s Mike Kyle, who pulled off a shocking upset, clipping Cavalcante and finishing him with heavy strikes on the ground which was shocking to many.

Since that loss, Cavalcante bounced back with a trio of huge knockout victories, including a monumental third round finish of champion “King Mo” Muhammed Lawal in the main event of Strikeforce: Houston in 2010.

Unfortunately, “Feijao” would not be able to successfully defend his title, losing via knockout to Dan Henderson last year to drop his belt, but he bounced back again, scoring a late second round victory over Yoel Romero last September. He’ll likely have an opportunity to fight for the vacant title if he can avenge his prior loss to Kyle.

How he gets it done: Cavalcante has some very nasty elbows, knees and a ground game. If he wants to avenge his loss to Kyle, I’d expect to see him close the distance, get in the clinch and start pounding away on “Mak” with his joints.

If Cavalcante can drag Kyle to the ground, he definitely should. Kyle has some respectable ground striking, but he’s far from accomplished in the grappling department and he could be prone to some serious guard passing, ground and pound and potentially even submissions.

What Cavalcante doesn’t want to do is stand in the pocket and trade strikes with Kyle. He can match the American Kickboxing Academy fighter with power, but he’s susceptible to getting rocked on the feet and doesn’t have the greatest ability to take big strikes.

The clinch and ground are where Cavalcante will likely be most comfortable.

Mike Kyle

Record: 19-8-1 (1 no contest) overall, 3-3-1 in Strikeforce

Key Wins: Rafael Cavalcante (Strikeforce: Lawler vs. Shields), Tony Lopez (KOTC: Honor), Marcos Rogerio de Lima (Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Kharitonov)

Key Losses: Antonio Silva (Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Babalu), Fabricio Werdum (Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg)

How he got here: Mike Kyle has had a very strange career arc. He stepped up and faced some very difficult opposition early in his career, losing bouts to the likes of Dan Bobish, Paul Buentello and Justin Eilers in his first 11 fights.

He had a very difficult 0-3-1 stretch from 2006-2008, most notably his incredibly bizarre actions in a WEC title fight against Brian Olsen where he refused to quit attacking his opponent after the referee tried to pull him off and he was disqualified and suspended for an extended period of time.

Since then, he’s gone 8-2 with one no contest and his only losses have been when he stepped up to take on Fabricio Werdum and Antonio Silva at heavyweight. He nearly pulled off a huge upset against Silva, rocking “Bigfoot” on the feet early but failing to finish the big man on the ground.

Kyle has looked very strong at 205 pounds, but has been plagued by injuries as of late. only fighting once in the last year and a half. He’s hoping to get more active and become a contender if he can repeat history against Feijao.

How he gets it done: Kyle doesn’t have an advantage over Cavalcante on the ground or in the clinch, but he does have some serious power in both hands and has a better chin.

If Kyle wants to score another victory over “Feijao” he’s got to utilize his fast hands and crack Cavalcante on the chin. Kyle has fight-ending power as evidenced by his multiple knockouts and his ability to drop even Antonio Silva.

Footwork will be key for Kyle to find an opening against Feijao. Perhaps he can take advantage lunging in if Cavalcante backs away straight as he’s been prone to do on occasion. The one thing that’s most important of all is if he hurts “Feijao” he can’t let him off the hook. He has to aggressively attack and put him away as he might not get another opportunity.

Fight X-Factor: The biggest X-Factor for this fight is Mike Kyle’s health. The man has suffered a series of really bad injuries and hasn’t been able to train like he’d like to in recent bouts, also being sidelined for extended periods with hand injuries.

If he breaks his hand against Cavalcante, he could be in for a world of trouble as his power decreases drastically after hurting his fist, as evidenced by his inability to finish Antonio Silva after breaking his hand throwing hammer fists on the canvas. If he stays healthy, he’s got a shot, but once you start breaking your hand consistently, it’s not something that just gets better overnight.

Bottom Line: Both of these men have history with each other and both are capable of finishing a fight on a moment’s notice with their power on the feet. Mike Kyle has really had some entertaining fights in the last few years and “Feijao” always brings it. I expect these guys to go toe-to-toe and throw down for extended periods and the likelihood of a finish is extremely high whether it’s submission or knockout. This should be very fun.

Undefeated (9-0) Strikeforce Heavyweight Daniel Cormier will face what will undoubtedly be his toughest test to date in his young mixed martial arts (MMA) career as he takes on Josh Barnett this Saturday (May 19, 2012) in the finale of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix.

Cormier, a former Olympic wrestler, will look to derail the red-hot Barnett (who is on a nine-fight win streak himself) and earn the grand prix title in a tournament which at one time had fighters such as Fedor Emelianenko and Alistair Overeem participating in it.

The American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) trained fighter stepped up as a reserve and replaced “The Reem” after the former K-1 kickboxing champion was yanked from the tournament by the powers that be over at Zuffa, only to sign with Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) two months later.

Now, looking to make the most of his opportunity, the wrestling prodigy looks to take out one of the most seasoned veterans in the heavyweight division and earn his one-way ticket to the UFC, though he may have to fight once more in Strikeforce should he prove victorious this Saturday night.

Appearing on “The MMA Hour,” Cormier, looks ahead to his showdown with Barnett this weekend in San Jose and says “The Warmaster” will be making a huge mistake if he’s basing “DC’s” potential as a challenge based solely on his limited amount of fights.

Check it out:

“Guys have to be confident, you know, they have to be confident in their ability and what their game-plan is and in himself. If Josh didn’t feel that way, then he would really be doing himself an injustice. You know what? He has to come out there and prove it. Listen, I fought nine times, yes, but I have had tons of fights. I wrestled at the highest level and I know when we think of Jon Jones and some of these guys that are champions with few wins we think, Oh, well Jon’s a freak, he’s the exception. But, Mauricio Shogun Rua, probably didn’t expect him to be ready to be UFC champion, or Rampage Jackson or the rest of the guys that he has beaten up to this point. If he is basing that assessment on the fact that I haven’t fought as he did, then he is making a huge mistake.”

Though Cormier only has nine professional MMA bouts under his belt, he says his past wrestling experience has prepared him for the highest level of competition and says he has some new ‘tricks’ that Barnett may not have ever seen and will not be prepared for:

“I do what I have been training. As I said before when I fought Bigfoot Silva, I do what I have done my entire life. I have won a lot. I’ve won at every level and competed with the best at every level. So I just have to go out and do what I’m trained to do, do what I’m used to doing, and that’s competing hard, competing smart and getting my hand raised. History shows that I am pretty good at that, I find ways to win. Going back to him saying I’m just not prepared for that, well, there’s some tricks that I have. There’s some things that I know that he’s not prepared for, that he hasn’t seen before. What’s Josh Barnett going to do when he has to fight from his back or stand in front of me the whole time where he can’t get on top. Those are things that he is not used to.”

What’s your take Maniacs, can Cormier pull off what many would consider an upset and defeat the much more experienced Barnett? Or will “The Warmaster” reach into his bag of old tricks and show the young fighter a few things of his own on his way to his own victory?

Thoughts?

Easy come, easy go.

Hard-hitting heavyweight striker Sergei Kharitonov injured his neck and was forced to withdraw from his upcoming mixed martial arts (MMA) fight against Tony Lopez at the “2012 Glory World Series” on May 26 in Stockholm, Sweden.

Golden Glory head coach Martijn de Jong recently confirmed the change on Twitter.

Kharitonov (18-5) was last seen disposing of Mark Miller under the United Glory banner earlier this year in Russia. It was a nice rebound win (under kickboxing rules) for the former paratrooper, who was bounced from the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix with a submission loss to Josh Barnett back in 2011.

Stepping in to take his place will be Swedish “Sledgehammer” Llir Latifi (5-2-1), who was previously booked to throw hands opposite Jeremy Horn until “Gumby” blew out his knee.

Lopez (31-8) has been on an absolute tear under the King of the Cage (KOTC) umbrella, winning seven straight fights and securing seven violent finishes in the process. Just over half of all wins for “Kryptonite” have come by submission.
